76 Days To Go: Muladhara and the Medicine of Fear

I’m sure most of you have heard about the chakras and their significance for the subtle body. In Tantra, the chakras play an important role since it is through their circling form -or vortexes- that the Kundalini -or vital energy of Life- flows through.

Described as being aligned in an ascending column from the base of the spine to the top of the head, the chakras are thought to vitalize the physical body and be associated with interactions of a physical, emotional and mental nature. Their function is to spin and draw in this energy to keep the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical health of the body in balance.

This one is important: They are said by some to reflect how the unified consciousness of humanity (the immortal human being or the soul), is divided to manage different aspects of earthly life (body/instinct/vital energy/deeper emotions/communication/having an overview of life/contact to God).

I’m also sure a heavier explanation of the chakras and their significance according to ancient tantric scriptures will make some of you loose track almost at the beginning concepts. In 100 Layers From God we want to speak candidly while breaking down the concepts in a basic form for everybody to digest them with ease.

What does each chakra stand for? Addressing symptoms of balance and imbalance. What to do to clear the areas of life (LAYERS) related to each one of them?

Bearing our promise, we begin speaking about Muladhara, Root, or Earth Chakra.

Of red color, it is located at the base of the spine and it deals with survival. If balanced, you feel grounded, stable and secure. You feel present in the here and now. Connected to your physical body and welcome in all situations.

LAYER: It is said that Muladhara is blocked by FEAR. If fearful or nervous, is probably under-active. If over-active, you may be very materialistic and greedy. You’re probably obsessed with being secure and resist change.

Throughout the course of these 24 days we have spoken about fear quite a few times… How about embracing fear as an opportunity? As medicine? What are you most afraid of? Let your fears become clear to you, and it will be clear how they confront your sense of survival. The answers to restore balance will be presented upon you.

An Aries Woman peeling layers… Medicine of Fear
Is utterly interesting how fear has been manifesting itself lately in all realms of Life: About my relationship with nature, my zodiac sign comes from fire, therefore, water as my opposite is a part of my medicine of fear.

The tribes have been gathering. This time was the Autumn Equinox and a Kirtan was held at night at the beach, after which, I decided to go into the sea. The waters were relatively mild, so I was confident to dive in but only up to my neck. Who would’ve said a wave with so much intensity would come? It hit me hard, almost bearing me naked, shooting air bubbles from my mouth and nose. Such a strong current was keeping me under water for almost an eternity, subjectively. For an instance I feared for my life.

Just as the other day, during a one day vision quest to the river, I found myself again facing a very strong current of water pushing me under and against rocks. I can still sense the water coming into my nose and mouth, eyes popping out of my head, my heart pounding so hard with fright.

*With a little help of my friends*, I made it into a dark cave under a cold strong waterfall, being washed, clinging myself to the wall, and muting all sounds but the one sound of water coming hard clashing down my neck and shoulders. Alive and supported.

Still processing… Medicine takes time.
